Hoe communiceren mensen in Afrika en Europa met elkaar in de 21de eeuw? Welke invloed hebben de massamedia op het samenspel tussen lokaal en mondiaal taalgebruik? Deze vragen komen onder andere aan bod tijdens het Graduiertenkolleg op vrijdag 22 februari.

Tijdens dit Graduiertenkolleg wordt de focus gelegd op taalcontact en zijn verandering in de voormalige Nederlandse en Duitse kolonies. Het gaat om de vraag naar norm en variatie in meertalige maatschappijen. Zes wetenschappers bespreken op deze dag theoretische concepten, onderzoeksmethodes en concrete voorbeelden om de rol en functie van meertaligheid in postkoloniale samenlevingen in kaart te brengen.

Graduiertenkolleg: Routes of Communication between Africa and Europe | Language Contact and Language Change in Postcolonial Societies
How do people in Africa and Europe communicate with each other in the 21st century? What effects do mass media have on the interplay between local and global language use? These questions, among others, will be addressed at the conference 'Routes of Communication', in which the focus lies on language contact and language change in the former Dutch and German colonies. It is about the demand for standardization as well as variation in multilingual societies. Six researchers will discuss theoretical concepts, research methods and examples to map out the role and function of multilingualism in postcolonial societies.
