The political representation of lesbians, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people in the Netherlands and Germany

In 2023 verscheen deze dissertatie van Anne Louise Schotel, promovenda bij het Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam:

"Lesbische, homoseksuele, biseksuele, transgender en intersekse (LHBTI) personen hebben in slechts enkele decennia zichtbaarheid en rechten verworven, en zijn in toenemende mate aanwezig in de politiek. Maar deze verhoogde zichtbaarheid komt niet iedereen onder de LHBTI-paraplu op dezelfde manier ten goede. Identiteiten en belangen die als legitiem worden beschouwd in de politiek komen overeen met taken-for-granted noties van politieke cultuur. Deze dissertatie onderzoekt wat dit betekent voor de vertegenwoordiging van groepen die niet binnen deze frames passen, en stelt dat het bestuderen van de politieke vertegenwoordiging van LHBTI-personen het centraal stellen van zichtbaarheid vereist. Dit onderzoek onderscheidt drie perspectieven op zichtbaarheid: categorisch, media en politiek. Deze perspectieven dragen bij aan de constructie van politieke normen, en leggen samen machtsmechanismen bloot die mogelijkheden voor politieke vertegenwoordiging creëren of juist beperken. Het proefschrift belicht de manier waarop fundamentele veranderingen kunnen plaatsvinden onder ongunstige politieke omstandigheden. Een intersectionele analyse van de verschillen tussen de groepen onder het LHBTI-label legt de grenzen van zichtbaarheid als strategie voor erkenning bloot en illustreert het belang van het ontrafelen van de manieren waarop geslacht, seksualiteit en genderidentiteit in de politiek worden gedefinieerd. De bevindingen benadrukken het belang van de bredere heteronormatieve en cisgendered grenzen van de politieke ruimte en hoe deze mogelijkheden voor politieke inclusie kunnen creëren of beperken." Lees meer over de publicaties van Anne Louise Schotel

Multilingualism and Mixed-Mode Communication
Sociolinguistic Insights into the German-Namibian Diaspora

In het voorjaar 2023 verscheen deze dissertatie van Henning Radke, promovendus bij het Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam:

"Like other disciplines, the field of sociolinguistics is not a homogenous one. It rather comes in three “loosely connected waves” (Eckert 2012) with each wave applying specific sets of methods. How can we use methodological triangulation and combine these methods, both quantitative and qualitative in nature, to integrate the three waves of sociolinguistics? This dissertation focusses on this question through five case studies concerning the German-Namibian diaspora, i.e., German-speaking Namibians who migrated to Germany. Their multilingual repertoire (Standard German, Namdeutsch [Namibian German], English, and Afrikaans) is the main research object. The studies presented in this book use correlational analysis, participant observation and semi-structured interviews to unveil the interplay between extralinguistic variables (e.g., gender, mode, place of origin), individual styles and linguistic variation in both, face-to-face interaction and computer-mediated communication (CMC). In doing so, the dissertation adds the notion of translocalisation to the field of German Sprachinselforschung (research on German-language exclaves). I argue that this notion complements existing perspectives on local and regional dynamics and thus leads to a more holistic view on Sprachinseln. In het voorjaar 2022 verscheen het boek 'Knowledge Regulation and National Security in Postwar America' van John Krige (Georgia Institute of Technology) en Mario Daniels (DIA):

"Mario Daniels and John Krige set out to show the enormous political relevance that export control regulations have had for American debates about national security, foreign policy, and trade policy since 1945.
