Nieuwe Kerk
Spui 175
Den Haag
The Nieuwe Kerk (new church) is a church building in The Hague, situated on the Spui. It was built between 1649 and 1656 after the Grote Kerk (big church) had become too small.
The Nieuwe Kerk was designed by carpenter Pieter Noorwits. The church counts as an eminent example of early protestant church architecture in the Netherlands. As with many churches from that time, the Nieuwe Kerk is built with a focus on the middle point of the building. However, as opposed to other churches with this particular construction, the church doesn’t have singular circle forms or a plural ground plan, but instead it has two eight sided parts that have been connected to each other through a narrow part wherein the preaching chair is presented. The architecture of the church shows elements of both renaissance and classicism.
The church was closed in 1969 and reopened after a thorough restoration as a concert hall.
